The Center for Alcohol and Drug Resources

Grounded in a spirituality that treasures the dignity of all, The Center for Great Expectations seeks to form a partnership with homeless pregnant and/or parenting women and adolescents, men, and their children, in creating a safe place, safe presence, and a safe path, that enables clients to experience, choose and maintain physical, psychological, social and spiritual health for themselves, their children and families START is one of the programs in Center for Great Expectations continuum of care. START is a community-based home visitation/telehealth service for pregnant and postpartum persons striving to overcome substance use. Licensed clinicians offer counseling tailored to the needs of the mother-baby system. Community doulas provide birth education, support at the hospital, and honor the transition to motherhood as a rite of passage. Peer recovery specialists bring the expertise and perspective of a person living in recovery. Services are free and provided for up to 18 months in Essex, Hunterdon, Western Hudson, Middlesex, Morris, Somerset, and Union Counties.

TREATMENT PHILOSOPHY&nbsp;
We, at JSAS HealthCare, Inc., believe that substance use disorders are treatable bio-psychosocial diseases. We believe that treatment is most effective when it is individualized and approached in an interdisciplinary and comprehensive manner that addresses the unique characteristics, strengths and weaknesses of each patient. We respect each of our patient&rsquo;s &ldquo;stage of readiness for change,&rdquo; and work to increase each patient&rsquo;s commitment to treatment and the recovery process. We accept harm reduction as a valid treatment goal. We encourage 12-Step involvement but accept that there are other roads to recovery as well. Our goal for each patient is a new freedom of body, mind and spirit that reflects success in the process of treatment and recovery. We accept medication-assisted treatment (MAT) as an effective treatment for opioid dependence in its own right. We support medically supervised withdrawal when clinically appropriate, but fully accept that there is recovery on medication-assisted therapy.

Prevention is Key is dedicated to the promotion of health and well being of our community, prevention substance abuse, addiction, violence and related issues through heightened awareness, advocacy, education, programs, services, information and referrals. Morris County Prevention is Key Inc. (MCPIK) is a private, non-profit, community based health organization serving Morris County by providing science-based prevention education programs, professional development training, advocacy, information and referral services, that address issues of substance abuse prevention, recovery support, violence prevention, ATOD dependence and other emerging issues of concern to the community.

Prevention Links is a private, not-for-profit organization. With community being defined as any environment where people live, work, or learn, the goal of Prevention Links is to pull together all available resources to eliminate the deleterious effects of drugs, alcohol, violence, and inadequate educational and health institutions in our communities. Our mission is to foster healthy sustainable communities by empowering people through education, collaboration and by serving as the linkage to resources. Prevention Links, established in 1970, has an extensive history of providing science-based prevention programs that introduce and reinforce the skills necessary for youth to make good choices; to strengthen families; and, to train community members in best practice strategies to delay or prevent the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Our work focuses on identifying and enhancing existing strengths within the individual, family, school, and work setting to serve as the first and most valuable resource in sustainable revitalization of all types of community. Through implementing training programs and evidence-based strategies, practices and programs that are outcome-based, we empower all segments of the community to be actively engaged in changing their environments.

Prevention Links

Open Door Recovery Center uses peer-based approaches within a safe and inclusive environment to support, empower, and provide resources to all persons in recovery from problematic substance use. We provide all attendees with services such as direct peer-to-peer support, peer-support groups, educational workshops, substance free activities and events, wellness planning, linkages to resources, and access to peer recovery coaching. Open Door Recovery Center also aims to reduce barriers for persons in recovery by decreasing the stigma surrounding substance use disorders in the broader community. This is achieved primarily through hosting educational events, implementing community-wide stigma-free campaigns, and building key partnerships with medical practitioners and law enforcement. All services, activities, and events provided ensure confidentiality and are free of cost.

Open Door Recovery Center 

The Southwest Council, Inc. is a private, non-profit, health agency providing prevention, education, early intervention, and outpatient treatment services to the NJ counties of Cumberland, Salem, and Gloucester. Founded in 1991 as a primary Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug (ATOD) prevention services provider, The Southwest Council&rsquo;s sole mission is to reduce the prevalence of abuse of these harmful substances. The Southwest Council&rsquo;s goal is to increase awareness about ATOD related problems in our communities, schools, businesses, and professional organizations, as well as assisting families and individuals by offering services and referrals whenever possible.

This session will focus on building capacity related to equity, justice, and inclusion when developing recovery communities using the work done within collegiate recovery as a point of reference. The session will be centered in recognizing the role of systemic oppression and how it has limited access to particular groups, and how to create access for people seeking recovery who have been systematically disenfranchised from recovery communities and in society.

Centering Equity & Justice in the Development of Recovery Communities

Building resilience, improving your outlook on life, and finding the energy to work with the most challenging people and situations can be done by looking at how we engage in the world. In this interactive session, participants will use both story and song to improve their mood and learn how to change their worldview to be more hopeful. Come prepared to sing, look at the stories you tell yourself about yourself, and enjoy an hour of building your skills.

Songs and Stories: Building Resilience for Your Mental Health

This session will explore the neurobiology of addiction and shame, which happen to be highly correlated. Empathy is a tool we can all use to combat shame, and we will discuss various clinical and societal implications. Attendees will learn more about their own brain circuitry and their own emotions, and will also discover new ways to support their clients.

The Neurobiology of Shame and Empathy

The process of addiction recovery is difficult for adolescents and emerging adults (youth) and often involves multiple returns to use and subsequent rounds of treatment. Recovery capital is the total set of resources one can use to initiate and sustain recovery and is comprised of four major domains &ndash; human, financial, social, and community resources. Social recovery capital (e.g., sober friends, family, and peer groups) is vital to reducing substance use, especially for adolescents. Social contexts shape social identity &ndash; who I am &ndash; which is generated from social group memberships &ndash; who we are. Social identity develops through interaction with social groups and changes over time as adolescents develop and engage with different social groups. As peer norms and values are strong influences on youth health and risk behaviors, one&rsquo;s social identity is an important determinant of actual behaviors in social contexts. Recovery becomes more or less difficult depending on social influences and how these interact with other recovery capital resources. This presentation will discuss the research on the importance of recovery capital, specifically social recovery capital for youth recovery, discuss the process of social identity change during treatment and recovery, and describe the ways specific peer recovery supports for youth, such as recovery high schools and alternative peer groups can support this process.

Social Networks, Social Influence, and the Importance of Peer Recovery Supports for Recovering Youth

As peer recovery support services continue to proliferate the continuum of care and communities throughout the United States, measure the efficacy of such services in the various ways they are delivered is critical to the field's long term success. This session will provide an overview of recovery support services as delivered in-person and digitally, best practices for the measurement of the impact of such services, and then culminate with a review of national recovery support services data collected over the last 36 months across the United States.

Today&rsquo;s marijuana is much more potent than in the past &mdash; with pot edibles, candies, cookies, ice creams, and waxes being up to 99% THC. In comparison, marijuana in the Woodstock era contained 5% THC.
