Mushrooms (Agaricomycetes) are superbly adapted to the terrestrial environment. From their elegant aerial spore dispersal mechanisms (ballistospory) to their symbiotic associations with trees, Agaricomycetes are land-dwelling organisms par excellence. However, a few lineages of mushroom-forming fungi have secondarily returned to an aquatic habitat. Several traits are associated with these transitions: saprotrophy (i.e., a decayer lifestyle), evolution of gasteroid (puffball-like) forms, and, in some cases, associations with mangroves. In this talk, I will highlight a few cases of these &ldquo;mushrooms to the sea&rdquo;. I will focus particularly on the &ldquo;water tiger&rdquo;, Lentinus tigrinus, an amphibious, dimorphic fungus that appears to be transitioning to an aquatic lifestyle.&nbsp;

NOMENCLATURE, How to name a fungus based on the Code (ICN) Can&rsquo;t find a description for your collection? Could it be new? How do you know a fungus is undescribed? What is the Code? What are the rules? How to choose a name. What is a type specimen? What if a type specimen cannot be found? What is taxonomy? Why do names change? I will cover some of the main considerations of nomenclature and how it relates to taxonomy. Some actual examples are illustrated. This an introduction to a very large topic. &nbsp;

How to Name a New Fungus

Hygrophorus is a genus of mycorrhizal species mostly found in boreal and temperate forest of the northern hemisphere. They are recognized by their tricholomatoid or omphaloid aspect, thick and waxy, adnate to decurrent lamellae, divergent hymenial trama, narrowly elongated basidia with prominent sterigmata, and white spore deposits of hyaline, ellipsoid to lacrymoid and guttulate spores. Systematics of the genus has been widely reviewed by Jean Lodge and colleagues in 2013, but certain areas still remained to be clarified. Ren&eacute;e will present the results of an international study in which she participated on section Olivaceoumbrini and which resulted in the description of seven new species, including four species for North America, and the delimitation of four new sections besides sect. Olivaceoumbrini. These new sections encompass common species like Hygrophorus agathosmus, H. pustulatus and H. olivaceoalbus.&nbsp;

This talk will highlight some of the fascinating fungi from the Congolian rainforest in southeast Cameroon. From amazing boletes, bright pink Amanita, or over 25 species of chanterelles, we will go over some of the amazing diversity, and the difficulties of collecting fungi in a remote tropical ecosystem.

Mushrooms of the Congolian Rainforest

Rare fungi are rare, aren't they? Or is it that we just don't know when and where to look for them? This workshop that was originally given on September 15th to the Newfoundland Club springboards off of the recent &ldquo;West Coast Rare 10&rdquo; fungi project of the Fungal Diversity project - FUNDis.org [https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/fundis-rare-10-challenge-west-coast]. It addresses the concept of finding lesser known fungi and the value of doing so, as we prepare to roll out the next Rare 20 Northeast Fungi Project through using iNaturalist. Through the author's examination of field collection records for North America, a select list of 20 rarely encountered fungi will be reviewed and described. Habitats and collecting history will underscore why they important to better understand now as climate change alters the baseline conditions in the Northeast.

Rare Northeastern Fungi - What We Know and Don't Know

There has been lots of press on mycorrhizal networks these days. This is in part because several books have recently come out that highlight mycorrhizal networks. The general message is that trees are highly connected below ground through their mycorrhizal networks. On that point am in full agreement. But I feel there are some misconceptions stemming from a phytocentric view. I think plant ecologists and foresters largely consider the fungal networks an extension of plant root systems and individuals are fused into large continuous networks. But my background in mycology suggests it ain&rsquo;t that simple! Fungi have evolved ways to recognize self from non-self and hyphae rarely fuse with other hyphae other than their own. Individuals within a species will reject fusions of other individuals in the same species, let alone individuals from other species. This probably evolved to prevent picking up viruses from non-self fungi. This is very analogous to our own immune system which rejects non-self tissue and is why patients need to suppress their immune system when getting an organ transplant. In any case, the mycorrhizal networks below ground are very complex and are likely not moving material back and forth between trees as easy as it is presented in the current popular press. But of course, we need more data!
