Climate-smart Healthcare means hospitals reducing their emissions to net zero and adapting so that they are prepared and resilient to the growing health burdens and pressures of climate change. To protect public health and the planet, we need Climate-smart Healthcare.

In this opening keynote session, Scotland&rsquo;s National Clinical Director, Jason Leitch, will share his insights on Scotland&rsquo;s own journey toward Climate-smart Healthcare. He will talk about the importance of net zero healthcare and how Scotland&rsquo;s leading the charge with a broad vision that involves all levels of healthcare in the fight against climate change.

Why climate-smart healthcare?

New to Climate-smart Healthcare and not sure how to get started? This session will support you to take those first steps toward low-carbon healthcare. It will provide you with first hand examples from those who have just taken the first steps in measuring their carbon footprint, setting targets, and building carbon management plans. It will also introduce you to easy wins - projects that you can implement to tackle direct emissions from transport and anaesthetic gases.

The path to low-carbon

Have you already implemented the easy wins at your hospital? If you&rsquo;re looking to take that next step and aim for zero carbon operations, this session will look at tackling more complex issues. It will cover measuring supply chain emissions, changing how we deliver care to focus on carbon benefits, and building a climate-resilient hospital.

From low carbon to zero carbon

To deliver climate-smart services, we cannot continue with the status quo when it comes to delivering healthcare. Staff across the sector will need to adapt. This session will give insights into successful behavioural change campaigns across different specialities using innovation and new technologies.

Driving change

To advance net zero healthcare, hospitals and healthcare centres throughout Europe will also need support and direction from national and regional health authorities. This session will cover the role of health facilities and health professionals in ensuring system level change. Countries need to make commitments to develop climate-resilient and low-carbon health systems and take action to meet those aims by 2050.
