Asthma is a lung disease that makes breathing difficult for nearly 20 million adults in the United States. There is no cure for asthma, but the good news is it can be managed and treated so that adults living with asthma can live a normal, healthy life.&nbsp;
The American Lung Association is committed to supporting those affected by asthma. We offer a variety of resources from basic information about the disease to behavior change health education programs. Breathe Well, Live Well&reg; is one such community-driven health education program. The Breathe Well, Live Well program serves as the Lung Association's core program for adult asthma education. The evidence-based curriculum is based on national best practices for asthma care. The program is for adults who want to learn to take control of their asthma and feel better. It is the only program available nationwide that has shown to result in less severe asthma, fewer respiratory problems, and a better ability to stick to treatment plans.

Breathe Well Live Well

The American Lung Association is welcoming primary care clinics to join its Enhancing Care for Asthma quality improvement program. The American Lung Association&rsquo;s Enhancing Care for Children with Asthma program works with primary care clinics and medical providers to improve the quality of care and health outcomes for their patients with asthma. The program is focused on improving the health of people with asthma starting from childhood throughout their lives.
This free program is proven to improve a clinic&rsquo;s quality of asthma care, improve health outcomes of their patients with asthma, improve quality indicators/metrics, and capture legal and appropriate reimbursement.  This nationally recognized program has proven successful in more than 450 clinics in 17 states.&nbsp;
Initial published results revealed a significant improvement in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7983490/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">six key guidelines based indicators</a> including severity rating, patient self-assessment, controller medications, spirometry testing to confirm the diagnosis of asthma, written asthma action plans, and patient asthma education. Additional results published demonstrate a 37% and 47% reduction in asthma-related&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/02770903.2020.1741611?journalCode=ijas20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">emergency department visits and hospitalizations</a>, respectively. This program has also shown a <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7983490/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$1:$2.40 return on investment</a> to the healthcare system.&nbsp;&nbsp;
In addition to being available at no charge to primary care clinics, the Enhancing Care for Asthma allows providers and other healthcare professionals to earn Maintenance of Certification Part 4 credits, as well as CME and CEU credits. Enhancing Asthma Care 

The American Lung Association&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.lung.org/lung-health-diseases/lung-disease-lookup/asthma/asthma-education-advocacy/open-airways-for-schools" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Open Airways For Schools&reg;</a> is a school-based curriculum that educates and empowers children through a fun and interactive approach to asthma self-management. It teaches children with asthma ages 8 to 11 how to detect the warning signs of asthma, avoid their triggers and make decisions about their health.

<a href="https://www.lung.org/lung-health-diseases/lung-disease-lookup/asthma/asthma-education-advocacy/kickin-asthma" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kickin' Asthma</a> is an asthma self-management education program that empowers and teaches children ages 11-16 (grades 6-10) how to detect the warning signs of asthma, avoid their triggers, and make decisions about their health. The program is taught by an American Lung Association-trained facilitator. After attending a three-part blended learning training that takes between 3-4 hours, each facilitator is provided with a facilitator guide to deliver the structured curriculum in a school or community-based small group setting.&nbsp;

Kickin Asthma

The American Lung Association&rsquo;s project, Promoting Asthma Friendly Environments through Partnerships and Collaborations, will use proven effective strategies outlined in the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/national-asthma-control-program/php/exhale/index.html#:~:text=CDC%27s%20National%20Asthma%20Control%20Program%20(NACP)%20and%20its%20partners%20help,contribute%20to%20better%20asthma%20control." target="_blank" rel="noopener">CDC EXHALE</a> technical package to improve asthma control in populations. By engaging a network of asthma control programs, healthcare professionals, public health and professional health organizations, local, state and federal governments, and non-governmental organizations, the Lung Association will increase knowledge and adoption of strategies that improve asthma morbidity and mortality in communities with the highest burden of asthma.

Six Strategies to Better Asthma Control

Climate change is already harming our health in countless ways, from worsened ozone pollution due to warmer temperatures, to more frequent and intense wildfires producing dangerous particle pollution. Medical and health leaders are critical to raising awareness of the overwhelming health burden caused by air pollution and climate change. Event Raffle Information

The American Lung Association&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.lung.org/professional-education/training-certification/copd-educator-course" target="_blank" rel="noopener">COPD Educator Course</a> provides healthcare professionals with a thorough overview of COPD information. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema, is a chronic lung disease that makes it hard to breathe. The disease is increasingly common, affecting millions of Americans, and is the third leading cause of death by disease in the U.S. The good news is COPD is often preventable and treatable. The course includes practical information healthcare providers can use in their work with COPD patients. Specific attention will be given to smoking cessation, spirometry, COPD management, medication guidelines, end-of-life issues, pulmonary rehabilitation, oxygen therapy, and patient education. 
This course is designed for advanced practice nurses, respiratory therapists, internal medicine nurses, pulmonary nurses, pharmacists, and care managers.
Course Objectives After the program the participant will be able to: 1. Recognize that COPD is preventable and treatable and increasing in prevalence 2. Describe current evidence-based guidelines to improve the care of patients with COPD 3. Review risk factors and discuss interventions to reduce COPD readmissions&nbsp; 4. Recognize COPD risk factors and prevention strategies including smoking cessation 5. Understand principles for selection of appropriate oxygen therapy devices 6. Explain how pulmonary rehabilitation and self-management skills can improve quality of life for a patient with COPD 7. Utilize shared decision making and engagement strategies to help patients improve medication&nbsp; adherence, reduce health care burden, and be active in their healthcare. 8. Distinguish the role of spirometry testing for the identification and management of COPD&nbsp; 9. Demonstrate proper technique for medication delivery devices 10. Understand the role of palliative care and hospice for patients with COPD
