The American Lung Association <a href="https://www.lung.org/help-support/better-breathers-network" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Better Breathers Network</a> is a nationwide, online patient support program providing lung disease management tools and access to virtual support groups. Anyone can join the Better Breathers Network. Signing up for the network is free and will provide you direct access to <a href="https://www.lung.org/help-support/better-breathers-network/resources" target="_blank" rel="noopener">education</a>, support and connection to others also living with chronic lung disease.

Support for Patients with Lung Disease

The American Lung Association&rsquo;s project, Promoting Asthma Friendly Environments through Partnerships and Collaborations, will use proven effective strategies outlined in the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/asthma/pdfs/EXHALE_technical_package-508.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CDC EXHALE</a> technical package to improve asthma control in populations. By engaging a network of asthma control programs, healthcare professionals, public health and professional health organizations, local, state and federal governments, and non-governmental organizations, the Lung Association will increase knowledge and adoption of strategies that improve asthma morbidity and mortality in communities with the highest burden of asthma.

Six Strategies to Better Asthma Control

The American Lung Association&rsquo;s <a href="https://www.lung.org/lung-health-diseases/lung-disease-lookup/asthma/asthma-education-advocacy/open-airways-for-schools" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Open Airways For Schools&reg;</a> is a school-based curriculum that educates and empowers children through a fun and interactive approach to asthma self-management. It teaches children with asthma ages 8 to 11 how to detect the warning signs of asthma, avoid their triggers and make decisions about their health.

<a href="https://www.lung.org/lung-health-diseases/lung-disease-lookup/asthma/asthma-education-advocacy/kickin-asthma" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kickin' Asthma</a> is an asthma self-management education program that empowers and teaches children ages 11-16 (grades 6-10) how to detect the warning signs of asthma, avoid their triggers, and make decisions about their health. The program is taught by an American Lung Association-trained facilitator. After attending a three-part blended learning training that takes between 3-4 hours, each facilitator is provided with a facilitator guide to deliver the structured curriculum in a school or community-based small group setting.&nbsp;

The <a href="https://lung.training/courses/ask-advise-refer-to-quit-dont-switch.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ask, Advise, Refer to Quit Don&rsquo;t Switch</a> training is based on the CDC&rsquo;s Ask&ndash;Advise&ndash;Refer model and utilizes updated tools and strategies for conducting an effective brief tobacco intervention with patients identified as tobacco users, including e-cigarettes. This one-hour, on-demand online course seeks to target healthcare professionals who may have direct patient contact and may initiate a brief tobacco intervention.
The American Lung Association believes everyone who uses tobacco products can quit. Using FDA-approved quit smoking medications such as nicotine gum, patches, nasal spray, inhaler and lozenges and non-nicotine medications varenicline (Chantix&reg;) and buproprion (Zyban&reg;) are proven safe and effective to help relieve physical symptoms. Additionally, cessation counseling supports the behavioral change necessary for long-term recovery. Healthcare provider use of referral mechanisms like Ask, Advise, Refer to Quit Don&rsquo;t Switch are a key strategy for improving the impact of tobacco treatment.

A signature program of the American Lung Association, Asthma Basics is a free interactive course that can be accessed online, or given as an in-person workshop. Asthma Basics encourages better asthma management by highlighting what asthma is, its symptoms and triggers, types of asthma medication, asthma action plan templates, and how to respond to a breathing emergency. Asthma Basics is also available en Espanol!

Asthma is a lung disease that makes breathing difficult for nearly 20 million adults in the United States. There is no cure for asthma, but the good news is it can be managed and treated so that adults living with asthma can live a normal, healthy life.&nbsp;

The American Lung Association is committed to supporting those affected by asthma. We offer a variety of resources from basic information about the disease to behavior change health education programs. Breathe Well, Live Well&reg; is one such community driven health education program. The Breathe Well, Live Well program serves as the Lung Association's core program for adult asthma education. The evidence-based curriculum is based on national best practices for asthma care. The program is for adults who want to learn to take control of their asthma and feel better. It is the only program available nationwide that has shown to result in less severe asthma, fewer respiratory problems, and a better ability to stick to treatment plans.

The Breathe Well, Live Well&reg; Facilitator Training will prepare you to facilitate adult asthma education using the American Lung Association&rsquo;s award-winning resource, &ldquo;Breathe Well, Live Well: The Guide to Managing Your Asthma at Home and Work.&rdquo; The Facilitator Training is a 2-hour online module that includes the basics of asthma as well as preparation to facilitate adult asthma self-management education.

You are joined by many other healthcare professionals, public and community health workers and asthma educators to learn about asthma guidelines-based care and prepare for the certified asthma educator exam (optional). We have an expert panel of faculty lined up to present these important asthma topics that follow the current NHLBI EPR-3 Asthma Guidelines.
