A greener pharmaceutical supply chain for the people and planet

Erik Ruiz, Safer Pharma Manager at HCWH Europe, will look into the issue of environmental pollution stemming from pharmaceutical supply chains. With a focus on manufacturing regions, he will explore the impact of pharmaceutical pollutants on ecosystems and human health, emphasising the global scale and urgency of addressing this growing concern.

Pharmaceutical pollution in the environment: a global perspective

Arianna Gamba, Director of Programmes at HCWH Europe, will present the organisation's approach to sustainable procurement in the healthcare sector. She will highlight practical tools like the Sustainable Procurement Index for Health (SPIH), developed in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). This index helps stakeholders monitor and address key environmental and social impacts throughout the healthcare supply chain, including greenhouse gas emissions, resource depletion, chemical/toxic effects, and human rights concerns.&nbsp;

Principles of Sustainable Procurement

Andreas Haener from Roche will present the AMR Industry Alliance's efforts to promote responsible effluent management in antibiotic manufacturing. He will highlight key initiatives and preview the upcoming WHO guidance on this topic, emphasising the importance of minimising environmental impact and addressing antibiotic resistance.

Maja Monsen, Pharmaceutical Adviser at the Norwegian Hospital Procurement Trust, will highlight the importance of sustainability considerations in decision-making and showcase a practical example of how environmental criteria can be effectively integrated into procurement practices, leading to more sustainable and responsible pharmaceutical supply chains.
