RIFM&rsquo;s scientists, working with critical collaborators across academia and industry, published 19 groundbreaking, peer-reviewed papers in 2020-2022 that enhance our understanding of fragrance materials&rsquo; safety, providing insights and methodologies to help further avoid animal and human testing.
Notable recent publications include: a Criteria Document for Evaluating Natural Complex Substances, a paper detailing RIFM&rsquo;s use of chemical clustering and read-across (using data from one substance to help understand another similar substance), and The Genotoxicity Team published research papers confirming the use of the EpiDerm 3D Skin Assay, evaluating the effectiveness of the BlueScreen H.C., and a report comparing the BlueScreen results of 371 ingredients with in vitro and historical in vivo (animal) data.

Fragrance Safety Resource Center

As part of its commitment to transparency, the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM) has published its research and safety assessments in the peer-reviewed literature since the 1970s. Safety assessment begins with data, and the RIFM Database contains the largest collection of fragrance and flavor material data in the world. RIFM evaluates all fragrance ingredients on a five-year rotating basis and publishes revised assessments when new relevant data becomes available.

The RIFM Safety Assessment Process: Overview and Value

Read-across is an internationally recognized alternative to animal testing, wherein scientists use a chemical for which there is a lot of data to help predict the toxicological profile of a structurally similar chemical for which little to no data exists. An overview of RIFM's use of read-across and a case study.

RIFM's Research Strategy: A Focus on NAMs

RIFM recently published its Criteria Document for Natural Complex Substance (NCS) safety assessment and submitted its first NCS assessment to the peer-reviwed literature. This session will fetaure an overview of the NCS assessment process and will focus on component analysis for the skin sensitization endpoint.
