In this keynote address, Justice Montoya-Lewis will discuss the importance of illustrating the qualitative with the quantitative and the narrative. &nbsp;In the legal, healthcare, and behavior health systems, practitioners rely on learning how to quantify and study the lives of the people who interact with these systems. &nbsp;We place more value on the ideas we can prove through numbers and studies. &nbsp;Our reliance on quantitative results and scientific categorization leads to placing less importance on the narrative&mdash;the stories our clients tell us. &nbsp;Numbers matter and scientific reasoning remains crucial, just as legal analysis helps us to develop a legal system upon which we can rely. But the stories our clients tell should shape our systems and in order to better serve those clients, we have to learn to listen. &nbsp;Justice Montoya-Lewis will share some stories to demonstrate the importance of &nbsp;these principles and ask participants to consider how they might incorporate narrative into their practice.

By sharing personal experiences and insights, attendees will gain a profound understanding of the challenges faced by immigrant families dealing with mental health issues. This presentation offers actionable strategies to challenge stigma, initiate open dialogues, and advocate for mental health equity in the pursuit of a more inclusive and empathetic behavioral health landscape.

Breaking Mental Illness Stigma in Immigrant Communities

Unconscious or unspoken racism compromises clinical discussions and outcomes. Learning to listen for the clues and skillfully bring up race as opportunities to connect meaningfully with your clients of color and provide them with the high quality of care they deserve. Create a safe environment where clients can be seen fully, as they are, without pretense. People of color, traditional, don't feel welcomed and tend to avoid mainstream clinical resources and consequently are unable to access much needed sometimes critical resources. As a non-topic in therapy, it inhibits and deters authentic communication and inhibits therapeutic connections.

American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) people in WA State are disproportionately, negatively impacted by the opioid public health crisis. At the same time, Tribes and AIAN organizations are uniquely positioned to develop and implement innovative, timely, and effective strategies to prevent/mitigate harms in strengths based, culturally grounded approaches. This panel will discuss the impacts and solutions of the opioid crisis for AIAN people.

At the heart of Greg Frankson&rsquo;s artistic work is a deceptively simple idea: Every voice has value. In this presentation, Greg will examine how owning one&rsquo;s voice and sharing it more effectively, whether in social settings or through art forms like spoken word poetry, can have a positive impact in the community, teach important lessons about self and others, and contribute powerfully to creating impact and social change.
The session will end with closing remarks from Melody McKee, the Progrom Director for Harborview Behavioral Health Institute's Training, Workforce and Policy Innovation Center.
