Uganda Reinsurance Company Limited (Uganda Re) is a reinsurance company based in Kampala, Uganda and the country&rsquo;s first and only local reinsurance company. The company is governed by the Insurance Act of Uganda caption 213 and the Insurance (Amendment) Act No. 13 of 2011 and is licensed by the Insurance Regulatory Authority of Uganda (IRA) as a composite reinsurer to transact both life and non-life reinsurance business.
Uganda Reinsurance Company commenced trading operations in June, 2013 having been licensed by the IRA on 6th May, 2013. The company currently benefits from a 15% mandatory cession of all facultative and treaty reinsurances in Uganda as provided for by the mentioned Act and Regulations of the IRA.
With a client base including all insurance companies in Uganda, Uganda Re also underwrites risks from across the African Continent and Indian Ocean Islands and is committed to positioning itself as a regional capacity and risk solutions provider. The company has excellent strategic partnerships with reputable regional and international reinsurers and reinsurance brokers.
Uganda Re underwrites all classes of insurance business including life, health, casualty, transport, fire and engineering business and has sufficient underwriting capacity to meet business partners&rsquo; requirements supported by adequate retrocession protection from highly and internationally rated retrocessionaires.

The Uganda Insurers Association (UIA) as it is known today has existed since 1965. An association that was founded by Insurance companies to promote the development and expansion of sound Insurance and Re Insurance activities in Uganda.

ZEP-RE (PTA Reinsurance Company) was created under the auspices of the then Preferential Trade Area (the precursor to COMESA). The Company was to promote the trade in insurance and reinsurance trade through creation of capacity, training of the region&rsquo;s insurance personnel, provision of technical services and the re-investment of premium funds within the region. When the Preferential Trade Area became COMESA, ZEP-RE was recognised as one of its institutions under Article 174. ZEP-RE is the French acronym for PTA Reinsurance Company and which translates to &lsquo;compagnie de r&eacute;assurance de la zone pr&eacute;f&eacute;rentielle&rsquo;. ZEP-RE was established on 23rd November, 1990 in Mbabane, Swaziland through an Agreement of Heads of State and Governments.The Company started operations in August 1992 with its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.
Signatory Member States The original signatory Member States were:-Angola, Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somali, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Since then the following Member States have acceded to the Agreement establishing ZEP-RE:-D.R. Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Madagascar and Mauritius.
